AMACO Velvet semi-transparent underglaze paints offer two application possibilities. When used alone, they have a velvety or suede-like (velvet) appearance. Their color intensity increases when coated with AMACO LG Clear Transparent or Gloss glaze.

They can be used for detailed design work as underglazes fired at 1000°C – 1046°C (Cone 05/06) or even up to 1222°C (Cone 6) while maintaining color intensity and vibrancy.

All Velvet underglazes are highly pigmented and can also be used as full-coverage glazes. Once fired, their color closely matches the shade visible in the bottle. For solid coverage, apply 3–4 layers of Velvet glaze using crisscross brushstrokes. Wait for the moisture sheen to disappear between layers.

Sponge – Pour some color onto a glazed tile. Lightly dampen a sponge with color and gently dab it onto unfired clay or bisque ware. Let the first layer dry before applying additional coats. This method allows for faster and more even coverage than brushing.

Airbrushing – Dilute the colors with water to the desired consistency. Apply 3–4 layers for a smooth glaze finish, or just one layer for shading effects.

Antique Technique – To create an antique effect, mix 2 parts glaze with 1 part water. Use the widest brush possible to apply the mixture to the ceramic piece. Let it dry. Then, use a damp sponge to remove glaze from raised areas, frequently rinsing and rotating the sponge to create clear highlights for a textured, relief-like design.

All Velvet colors are non-toxic and lead-free.
